 The mystery of "XX Masamune"?

Traditionally, sake names have been local and tied to the region. For example, names that symbolize the hometown, such as "XX Mountain" or "XX River," evoke the rich nature of the land where the sake brewery is located. Also, because sake is an essential drink for celebratory occasions, many sake names use auspicious kanji characters such as "happiness," "longevity," and "joy."

By the way, sake with the name "Masamune" can be found all over Japan. You might think that there is some kind of connection between them, but in fact they are completely unrelated. So why are there so many sakes with similar names?

The brewery that is the root of "XX Masamune" is Sakura Masamune in Nada. During the Tenpo era, the 6th generation saw a scripture inscribed with "Rinzai Masamune" in the hermitage of a close monk, and named the new sake "Masamune" because the on-reading of "Masamune" is similar to the word "seishu" in Japanese. The deliciousness of the sake became a big hit, and the popularity led to an increase in the number of sakes bearing the same "Masamune" name all over the country. In the Meiji era, they applied for trademark registration, but it was already too late. "Masamune" had become synonymous with sake, and the trademark was not approved.

Catchy names are on the rise these days

Nowadays, sake names are free, and catchy ones with stylish labels that catch your eye are on the rise. This has the same aim as the so-called "buying it for the cover." The strategy is to change the image of sake, which has traditionally been thought of as somehow difficult to drink, and make it easier to pick up and think, "I'll give this a try." Sake with cat labels is a bit of a fad, and if you're a cat lover, you'll buy it without even thinking about it, right?

Alcohol with familiar names often has a juicy or fruity taste, and tends to be aimed at people who are just starting to drink sake. On the other hand, sake with bold names may have a new taste sensation that has never been experienced before. The excitement of not knowing what kind of sake it is and the wait to try it may be part of the fun.
